Description
Lamprologus Ocellatus Gold Shell Dweller Cichlids from Lake Tanganyika. These hardy fish generally max size 2″-2″+. Most times size available for sale 3/4″-1.5″ size. Males grow larger than the females. These fish live in empty shells on the lake floor. Hundreds of empty shells lay together, Ocellatus shell dwellers occupy these shells & set up residence. When an Ocellatus doesn’t like a shell next to its own, it will fill it with sand, the shell it does like it will defend very aggressively. Lamprologus Ocellatus do best on a protein diet like live/frozen brine shrimp, as well as CaliforniaCichlids Crumble feed which is 55% protein. They do well in a freshwater aquarium 78F. I do not perform any ph adjustments & recommend simply acclimating to your tap water after being dechlorinated. Ocellatus shell dwellers generally do well in a PH 7.2 – 8.2. I have seen done best in a 20-gal tank with just 1 pair providing a few shells (home hobbyist production) or even 1/2″ PVC 90 degree with cap on 1 end, easier to collect fry and fish from then a shell (commercial production). There are many methods to keeping and breeding this amazing little fish with such a big personality. See Video of Lamprologus Ocellatus Gold
